Fluid Imaging Technologies

Fluid Imaging produces industry-leading particle analysis instrumentation based upon digital imaging technology. The FlowCAM®, first manufactured in 1999, was the first automated particle analysis instrument to use digital imaging for measuring size and shape of microscopic particles in a fluid medium. Since that time, we have continued to lead the way in the use of this emerging technology. With applications in oceanographic research, municipal water, pharmaceutical formulations, chemicals, biofuels and many other markets, we continue to lead the way in imaging particle analysis.

Algaeventure Systems Inc. (AVS)

Algaeventure Systems (AVS) was founded in 2008 with a mission to take the cost barriers out of growing and processing algae, and in the process discovered a technology that will revolutionize dewatering and other solid-liquid separations. The key innovation, nicknamed HDD for harvesting, dewatering and drying, radically reduces the energy required to separate valuable solids from dilute solutions. Beyond replacing incumbent separation methods, AVS technologies are poised to unlock the potential of algae for a range of valuable products, such as pharmaceuticals, nutriceuticals and fuels, as well as enable new opportunities, including novel remediation techniques and a wide range of biomimetic industrial processes.

The AVS story begun in 2004 when Univenture (AVS’s founding company) started exploring the concept of producing products made from bioplastics. After intensive research into terrestrial plants including corn, soy and palm, it was revealed that only algae held the potential to sustainably produce bioplastics with the same, or better, performance characteristics than petroleum based plastics. However, in order for algae to be a viable resource, processing technology needed to be substantially improved. At this point, AVS was then formed as a separate entity inside Univenture to develop technologies to improve algae processing and commercialize the resulting discoveries and products.

AVS CEO, Ross O. Youngs, formed Univenture Inc. in 1988 with a vision to invent and manufacture a line of environmentally responsible media packaging products that are functional and cost effective. His products revolutionized the industry by increasing packaging functionality and performance while substantially reducing waste and cost. By utilizing multiple members of the management team from Univenture, AVS will be able to leverage a more than two decades long track record of inventing, manufacturing and successfully commercializing new products and technologies.

Bodega Algae

Bodega Algae, LLC, (Bodega) is a developer of scalable algae photobioreactors. The closed continuous-flow reactors produce high-energy algal biomass for use in the production of biofuel.

The Bodega photobioreactor is modular and stackable, allowing it to be co-located efficiently on the premises of industrial plants. The reactor uses nutrients readily drawn from a variety of waste streams. Sources for nutrients include wastewater from domestic sewage, municipal water treatment plants or carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) flue gases from industrial plants. The microalgae in the bioreactor converts these compounds to biomass, creating the feedstock for biofuel while improving the environment.

Microalgae has significant advantages when compared to conventional oil crop feedstocks. Algae produces over twenty times the amount of biofuel than soybeans on an equal amount of land due to rapid growth rates and high concentrations of lipids per cell density. In contrast to soybeans and other oil crops, the modest agricultural and resource requirements of microalgae make it an attractive low-cost alternative feedstock. Estimates indicate that algae grown in large volumes could reduce the cost of manufacturing a gallon of biodiesel by half of current rates. Lower costs and greater energy yield will make biofuels economically competitive with petro-fuels.

SBAE Industries

About SBAE

SBAE is an advanced biotech company specialized in the enabling of industrial production of microalgae.

SBAE has a unique expertise in selecting, cultivating and treating microalgae.

The company employs approximately 20 people, of which several have PhD levels in Biology / Biotechnology, forming a world class algae specialist team.

The R&D-team was able to convert its in-depth knowledge into large scale algae production techniques. SBAE developed and patented its own production platforms.

The Company’s strategy is based on two main axes:

  • Production of high quality algae at the lowest production cost. Presently SBAE has its focus on the aquaculture market and the microalgae business can be expanded to other markets.
  • Technology transfer for the construction of large scale algae farms(e.g. biofuel production plants).

The algae technology developed by SBAE can be used in several sectors such as:

  • Aquaculture Nutraceuticals
  • Waste water treatment
  • Cosmetics
  • Renewable energy
  • Biofuels
  • Animal Feed
  • Fine Chemicals

SBAE developed and patented two main technologies for the industrial production of microalgae, AlgaForce and DiaForce.

No matter what production system is used, the cultivation of algae relies heavily on the knowledge of algae populations and the creation of the right environment.
